CITY GARDEN
CHISWICK 4

CHISWICK 4, LONDON

The brief for the garden was to create a safe and inviting outdoor area to be used for lounging, dining and relaxing. Suggestion welcome to make the 2.8m wall opposite the dining area pleasant to look at. The garden would accommodate a sitting area, a lounging area, a lawn, wider planting beds, a BBQ area and storage. Lastly, the design will consider the family’s autistic child needs. The focus of the proposed design is to give a sense of a peaceful and timeless garden whilst creating a dynamic, playful thus calm atmosphere. The new layout is based on a safe and enjoyable sensory. The choices of subtle and natural colours (off white walls, gravel, wood, natural stone…) and organic shapes contribute to tranquillity of the new garden. The area is divided in three areas: a paved area with luxuriant planting beds around by the dining room, an oval shape lawn surrounded with plants and a sunny lounging decked area by the living room.  The height of the tall back wall is broken up by the addition of a retaining wall in front of it creating 2 levels of planting. The customed shed echoes the slatted fence and the sleepers retaining wall. A hanging cocoon provides a floating nest to hide and rest. The sensory garden includes attention to the five senses: Touch: bare feet on the deck, on round cobbles, climbing of the sloping retaining wall, swinging hammock, grasses; Vision: domed shape plants, splashes of bright colours within planting or furniture, vibrant autumn colours; Smell: Mexican orange, jasmine, roses, honeysuckle, herbs… Taste: small vegetable/herbs garden. Hearing: gravel, wind in foliage
